For many early childhood educators, years leading up to having any ‘real’ on-the-field experience with children, were filled with fantasies of all sorts. Some thought the experience was going to follow the pattern of singing songs, playing with playdough, reading stories, and stuff like that. That was exactly Stephanie’s thinking while she was in college preparing for her career as an ECE professional until her very first practical experience as a Practitioner in KT10 Esher nursery school.
She now has a hands-on experience of the tragic reality many experienced ECE professionals go through- the challenge of working with a child who has already experienced trauma in the early stages of their life.
Stephanie loved her new KT10 Esher Nursery school so much. The environment was stimulating and supportive, the children were adorable and the other Nursery staff were all friendly and kind as well. Hardly had she started her role as a Nursery Practitioner than she took notice of a boy named Garry.
Garry clearly didn’t trust Stephanie as his new teacher and he exhibited subtle signs of both timid and violent classroom behaviour continuously. Also, he had a strong difficulty in learning; unable to recall or follow simple instructions.
This went on for a while and then Stephanie knew it was time to step up and delve deeper into the matter. She confided in her Nursery Manager who arranged a meeting with Garry’s guardians.
Through that timely intervention, an ongoing abuse happening at the blindside of Garry’s parents was identified and stopped. A timely intervention!
At the end, as tough as it was to work with a child who had experienced trauma, Stephanie experienced the reward of being his advocate which led to his freedom. Garry’s countenance and approach to learning improved steadily after the incident and Stephanie couldn’t be prouder of him!
This case was an isolated one among all the ECE centres in KT10 Esher, as usually the community is made up of highly responsible parents and guardians who are really invested in their children’s education and wellbeing.
From that encounter with Garry, Stephanie became a safe person for him and that experience made Stephanie realise how important her role as a nursery practitioner really is.
But most importantly, she was proud of her Nursery Management who were able to see the need for an intervention because they were experienced enough to tell the signs of a worrying situation. That made Stephanie even feel safer to be in their company, an opportunity she had Quint Education to thank for.
Quint Education spearheaded the recruitment exercise that led to her working in this Nursery when she had recently made the decision to relocate to KT10 Esher.
Now, she feels ready and more confident to go all out in caring for her nursery children.
